University of Utah - Internet Explorer sellouts

I've noticed that the University of Utah likes to use IE specific functions in their web page (namely, forms). It's frustrating because there are LOTS of people that like to use browsers other than IE. I guess it's not even that that bugs me, it's the ideology of forcing a product on the constituents of an educational institution.

Welcome to Math 1060 - your worst nightmare (just joking... maybe). I'm your professor and I thought that I would give you a "heads up" concerning the textbook (since there is some confusion about it).

The text is Larson/Hostetler 7th edition "Precalculus". It's ISBN number is:

ISBN-13: 978-0618643448

PLEASE be careful to buy the 7th edition. There is an 8th edition, but we're NOT using that (for reasons that you'll see below). The book is available at the bookstore (if you like to throw your money down the drain).

ALL of the 1060 sections use the same book (this semester there are only a couple of sections: one taught by Knaeble and one taught by me - that's why the bookstore lists it all under "Knaeble").

The good news is that this book is also used in the Math 1050 course, which is also a prereq for calculus. Hence at least you can use it twice. The BAD news is that the price of the book is (new) about $200... and used isn't much better ($150).

Fortunately, there are many used copies available on the internet starting at around $40 and up... but hurry to buy because you will be in serious trouble if you wait.

Now, since I dislike the overpriced bookstore, and I absolutely HATE Brooks Cole publishing (they are the scum of the earth), I can mention that I cannot stop you from downloading the book from somewhere off the internet illegally ... however I obviously cannot give hints on how to do that. Either way DO NOT WAIT to obtain the book.

We are sticking to the 7th edition because there are many used copies floating around, and because it is also used in 1050.

Water molecules, a survival story

While hiking in and around the mountains of Utah, sometimes, I encounter streams.
Meeting these little rivers always makes me think of the survival of the water molecule. As water always seeks the lowest point and flows the path of least resistance, our chance of crossing paths has a story behind it. I, traveled from my house by means of a vehicle to hike the mountains and enjoy the beauty of nature. The water molecules, on the other hand, got into the mountains by rain or some other type of precipitation. What luck that we were able to enjoy a chance meeting together!
I imagine what obstacles the water molecule had to go through to get to the moment of us meeting. I wonder what story it could tell me about its life. I imagine what it'd be like to watch the documentary of this water molecule's life.
I suppose we are sort of like that water molecule, fitting into the creation story of the universe.

Ants make beads

I remember one time as a child in elementary school there was an anthill. I noticed how curious it was that most the little rocks piled were about the same size. Sifting through the pile with a stick I noticed some beads in the mix. I thought that surely the ants couldn't make such uniform doughnut-shaped objects. I decided to make a mental note that the next time I found an ant hill away from people that I'd check to see if it had beads in it. Later, I stumbled upon a remote anthill and checked to see if there were beads in it. There were! Even now, I still believe that ants make beads.

As a student going into architecture this movie is brilliant! Go to IMDB and check it out.
My friend Anna invited me to a free screening of this movie that I've never even heard about. I don't see why I haven't because this movie has very talented people: DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard & Michael Caine.
The plan is simple, plant an idea inside someone's head by actually being in their dreams. The movie however, diving layers into a person's mind, renders a menagerie of story lines together to form a whirlwind of different genres into one, very successfully.

I applauded at the ending because of how well the story was executed. Visually, it was a treat and never let me down, always in good taste. Architecturally it was a treat to see elements of design made significant, trumpeting just how integral design is to our waking (or dreaming) world. The story fit neatly together and unfolded appropriately. I would most certainly use my hard earned money to see this film again and recommend my friends to do so as well :D Good Job Christopher Nolan!

UTA TRAX, fix your effing doors!

I know the UTA transit system readjusted their routes so as to accommodate fiscal savings in their budget. Which means, that they should have some extra cash on hand to fix the doors on their trains. Seems like lately its been a game of chance on which door to pick. If you have a bicycle you only get two chances to get it right before the train leaves you stranded and estranged like some out of work illegal immigrant. Though watching people frenzy to try and catch a train and miss it by moments always makes me smile it shouldn't be because the train's doors don't work.

But really, doors on any vehicle are VERY basic functions of transportation. People should not have to consider the doors opening on public transportation a luxury.

Windows 7 64-bit, Chrome

I'm pretty sure that Google's Chrome is the slowest browser ever when it comes to using it on a Win7 64-bit. Takes forever to load even seemingly simple things. Common Google. Really.

I read an article today about the new Firefox beta. Maybe I'll use that.

I tried the 64-bit version of IE but apparently Adobe Flash is not supporting 64-bit browsers yet and they tell you to use the 32-bit version instead. Tough luck, go home, do not pass go and absolutely do not collect $200.

Laaaame.

It seems that plenty of people are supporting 64-bit versions of Linux though. Or perhaps it's just that the grass is greener.

Doom 3 using Windows 7 64-bit, flickering problem solved

Starting up Doom 3 after installing patch 1.3 and patch 1.3.1 on a 64-bit Windows 7 operating system yielded me the fantastic result of a flickering screen. Almost akin to trying to play Doom 3 in a tornado consisting of black line-shreded paper.

I've reinstalled, re-patched, ran in administrator mode, and tried using the non-Aero theme but nothing worked.

Until...

I stumbled across this wonderful little app called RivaTuner. Here's the forum link I found to fix the scrolling flickering problem that plagues OpenGL based games in Windows 7.

And like most real billboards, is an offence to its surroundings. The one that offended me most is the one in the desert region. Sacrilege!

The Vein Across the Top of Your Hand

The main vein across the top of my hand moves freely like how a garden hose might flop and turn, but horizontally between two planes of skin and bone. Rarely, the movement will be great enough to warrant a tumultuous wriggling. When it does though, it makes me squirm and I marvel at how uncomfortable such a little thing can be. It's also curious enough to make me wish I could experience it again.

Metallica: Master of Puppets

After work I decided it was time to purchase another album. So I hurried myself on my bicycle to Graywhale and bought Metallica's Master of Puppets album. I've never listened to it before but have always been curious about Metallica's older stuff. I figured the stuff is classic, like Pink Floyd, so I couldn't really go wrong.

I wish it had a digital download option like my Health album did. Guess I'm going to have to transfer it to digital format manually.

I purchase my music in LP format whenever possible. I like the idea of music on a very tangible and almost obsolete medium. The quality is there, unlike cassettes and will not loose it's magnetic properties like cassettes tend to do. Over all, it's just WAY better than cassettes. However, when comparing with CDs it's different. The audio quality is there but something else is missing. Perhaps it's that I can manually place the needle at any place on the song that I can visually see, in effect, like a sampler. Or perhaps it's that the album art is HUGE when compared to the tiny liner notes found in CD cases. Sometimes albums come packaged with posters that are quite respectable. I'm not exactly too sure what the attraction is, but whatever it is, I feel more connected to what the musician(s) intended the listener to experience whilst listening to their art.

I use the Blackberry Storm and Opera Mini 5 Beta for my device is amazing.

It's the most dynamic app I've had. I've used the BB browser, Bolt, and the previous version of Opera. Not much of a diverse range of browsers but enough to establish that Opera Mini 5 Beta is probably better than them all. It has smooth transition animations when switching to various functions, definitely a plus to the overall feel.

The crackberry forum talks about Rim updating the BB browser and it might eventually be better than Opera 5, but for now, this browser is great.

I've only been using it for 2 days and my opinion might change but I doubt it. For a Beta version it seems pretty solid.

The photo above was probably the best part of the film besides the fantastically fresh molotov-on-the-hood-of-the-car scene.
Through the rough situations of the film I kept asking myself, "Why do they put me through this?! This is sooo intense!" I wanted it to stop and there was no end in sight midway through the nightmare joyride as I haven't read the book and the story was as unpredictable to me as a chicken with a jumpy case of the explosive-d.

This party killed.

Just kidding. I got in line and then when I/we got to the door for the people to secure that we were on THE LIST the flustered woman in charge said, "...Uhhh, yeah,…the people in charge of the White Lightnin’ party apparently gave all their guests false information and the gig isn’t on.”.

The people that were in line for the Vice party were all kicked outta line & evaporated into the thin air of Park City’s cold-as-hell main street that evening.

The Downstairs venue was the host of like 4 parties that night and the parties were all scheduled back-to-back like Mexicans in a pinto trying to get somewhere VERY fast and furiously.

I was like, that’s too bad. I thought Vice was better than that. But I suppose I’ll never discover the true story of what happened that night.

After the disappointment I proceeded directly to my friends house to share a comfy warm bed and a spanking fantastic comforter.

Upon reading, "O death, when is thy sting?" (http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=12332939) from the Economist and having also recently read a volume of Battle Angel Alita i've had a thought.

I was thinking that when I die I'd like for my organs to be donated. It'd be kinda cool to have my heart pumping and pumping and pumping even though my brain dies. To keep it somewhere running off of solar power. Living, but devoid of personality. Sorta like an organic equivalent of a photograph keepsake. It sounds like a neat novelty.

I was also thinking that would it be possible for my brain activity to keep going even though my body dies?

I mean, if they kept my brain alive and functioning then would it be worth living to have conciousness and no body? How long does a brain live? Does a brain die as the body dies? If it does, then if we sever the body/brain correlation and have them living separate from each other would a brain be able to live indefinately? If so then could we preserve brains for future use in a more technologically advanced world where we could eventually have a body? In that respect Battle Angel Alita subsribes to the idea (as far as i can tell) that what makes a person is what a concious soul/mind does with its body (no matter the type) living life. It matters not the method of how we interact with the world but that we do and that we live and that it leaves an impression on a soul, whether for good or bad.

Nine Inch Nails; Ghosts I - IV

I found the NIN Ghosts I-IV album at Graywhale and decided to purchase it considering what i've heard through the Ghosts web page (they provided free downloadable tracks).

I am happy to inform that i absolutely love this 36-track instrumental album. There's always been the thought that went, "it'd be great if this NIN song didn't have any words and was truely just instrumental". Well, now, that wish has been fulfilled and though the direction for the album is new to me (i've been out of the NIN loop for awhile now) it lends itself toward innovative new material, brushing often with experimentation. Which is no big surprise after all, because this album started off as a fresh-from-the-mind-and-let's-see-what-we-get musical collaboration. While listening, I am truely pleased when i understand the roots of it's creation.

Oct 28, 2008; A Power Outage

Last night there was a power outtage that concluded our night of scares.

Earlier, a large group of friends went to a spooky village to get scared. It was good and scary.

Afterward, we met up at a friends' house and had hot chocolate.

4 of us later decided the night was not finished yet so we decided to lurk a graveyard. It was massive and the night was pretty dark out.

I brought along my camera and took photos of the graveyard adventure.

Later, we told scary stories under a tall pine tree next to some graves. By that time we were thoroughly spooked. But brushed it off with some light humor.

Anna took us home and as we were chatting about stuff we noticed the lights go out on the west side of 1300 east which followed by a loud electrical-explosion-fizzling-static noise in the background. It seemd to come from around the 100 south and 700 east area. The others didn't see it but I saw a large discharge of white light. A split second later a large discharge of blue light occured with an accompanied sound, though not as loud. Parker saw the latter. Anna, left and we were spooked. About a minute later Jessica, Myself and Parker observed a 2nd police car headed toward the observed electrical disturbance area.

In my mind strong spiritual forces were up to shenanigans in the SLC. But the more rational part of my brain overtakes and keeps telling me it was more likely than not, a marsupial.

It was a good spoooky night.

My other part-time job just happens to be across the hallway from American Apparel in Salt Lake City, Trolly Square.

They moved into the mall earlier this year and that's when I discovered VICE.

VICE is one of the best publications to fall into my life.

Anyway, it's free and i'm too cheap to get a subscription. So everytime I'm visiting VICE online and find that there's a new issue I beeline to American Apparel to see if they have it. I mostly get dissappointed though because they don't seem to have them for like 3 weeks after the new issue is available online.

I got my hands on a copy this weekend and it's the best (but I always say that soon after i get a copy).

Brotha Ali doesn't know how to make Rulz and X-Files

Yesterday I didn’t have to work the evening time shift. I wanted to do something fun and see a face that I don’t normally see during the week, so I went to my friend’s house to return her Fear & Loathing dvd. She’s great she has the greatest smile and makes me smile every time I see it ‘cuz it’s one of the contagious ones ya know.

She was starting a season of Prison Break and I could tell she was really excited about it. She told me that she and her flatmate were going to the University of Utah’s RedFest and I should meet them there. Matisyahu and Brother Ali were going to be there. But mostly, I got excited ‘cuz it was like…6 bucks.

I arrived with my camera and the door chick was like…,

”you can’t take cameras in”

Then I was like, “that’s ok, but the sign says no sound or video recording equipment,…it’s a camera (no video – no sound)”

“sorry, you still can’t take it in”

“ok, but what about cell phones? Those have cameras (AND THEY RECORD VIDEO AS WELL)”

“I don’t make the rules, brother ali and friends request that they not be taken in”

I thought, “those are bogus rules”. Contradictory at best. So I reasoned to myself that Brother Ali must be having a bad hair day or he must be looking terribly deformed today to not want people taking photographs. Or maybe he’s not very intelligent and has super-stupid logic for making up rules. At any rate, I’d find out soon enough.

I rode my bicycle back home and dropped off my camera.

When I got back I found that Brother Ali didn’t even have hair and he didn’t look too deformed. He just looked fat. And he was rhyming about all kinds of social issues and what’s ailing “tha common folk”. So obviously he’s not stupid…but, maybe…, perhaps he is. I guess we’ll never know for sure. All I know is that he’s terrible at making rules for stuff you can and can’t take into his gigs.

I found my friend and her flatmate at the gig and we started playing tricks on the people that were watching the show by listening in on their conversations and catching a name. Then we’d yell out their name and watch them as they tried to figure out who was calling for them. We’d do that ‘till they got confused and curious enough to leave our area to investigate.

I watched the X-Files film at the dollar theatre after RedFest. It’s worth every nickel. Maybe, buuuut probably not. The dialogue at a few moments was like…, “WHA?!”. I mean, contrived and trying too hard to force the story along. Sort of like when we were kids playing House {the guys were forced into playing the game from the beginning...mostly ALWAYS by blackmail, but, let's be honest here...sometimes by our own free will} and we were pushed through these conjured up stories to accommodate “family life” and familial social situations. And because most times because we didn't really know what we were supposed to do they'd make up our dialoge for us and well...it was a mess. But X-Files, at times, was sorta like that.

*sigh*

I went back home and went to sleep after the film.

Oh yeah, and Matis-Yatis was cool too.

I found out earlier this week that I have new flatmates. I've meet them maybe once. But they seem like good people. Hopefully, they are.

Unlike one of my past flatmates *cough, COUGH, Stacey Multine, COUGH, cough* who decided it was in his best interest to move away and leave us with his rent & utilities to pay. Bastard.

If one of the new guys does that, i'm seriously gonna Eff his sh!t up. Ha ha, just kidding (kinda).

Father's Day; A Recollection of this Weekend

Today is Father's Day and it's ok.

Yesterday, I finished the Provo Riverwoods 10mi run at approx. 1hr 20min. It was fun.
I met Danielle there and at the top of the run we did a little trailrun warmup and experienced the morning meadow and green of this tranquil canyon.

I started the run at a moderate pace. I felt I could've gone WAY faster but decided to hold back and just flow with it. At mile 5 I decided it was time to pick up the pace and see what I could do. It was good that I went slower for the first 5 miles because toward the end of mile 10 my body was exhausted but not extremely spent.

Today, Father's Day, I had to work. I don't mind working sundays except when it totally throws off my groove of peacefulness...like, today. I mostly attribute my lack of enthusiasm at work to the fact that my body is still on the mend. Later, toward the last of my work day I drank a Rockstar energy drink and I was fit as a fiddle.

I called my father. The call went straight to voicemail and I left a message. I did talk to my little brother Josh though. It was nice to talk to a family member. I don't do that as oft as I know I should.

I wonder if life's cards has "father" in it's hand for me.
Who knows.

First Time Bouldering; Big Cottonwood Canyon

Yesterday I went bouldering with Danielle. She's a climber and an enthusiastic moderately experienced boulderer. I told her that I was interested, we made plans and did the deed yesterday.

I went to the University of Utah ORP (Outdoor Recreation Program) and rented shoes and a crashpad. They always have great prices for rentals.

We arrived and went exploring for the boulders she climbed last time she went. We eventually found them. You could tell they were popular places because of the well matted soil around the giant rocks.

I tried my hands on three paths.

Boulder one had two paths:
1. Starting out under the boulder on it's south side, you make your way up to this ridge and traverse east across till you reach a point. From there you make your way up to the top.

I made it from underneath to the beginning of the ridge and couldn't go any further. Danielle made it look soooo easy.

2. You start on the east sloping face side of the boulder and make your way to the top, the same place where path No.1 ends.

I tried this one the most. I hopped up on this step and made at-most 3 unique leg movements from there. I reached the southern ridge with one hand which would be key to conquering this route but couldn't go further. I don't think I trusted my footholds enough.

3. A separate boulder to the north of the first one had a route on the east side that went up a ridge, across its northern face and up to the top.

By the time I made it to this boulder I was getting a little tired. By the end of it I was mostly spent. I tried to traverse the ridge of this boulder to make my way across it's north face but lacked the strength to hold on for very long. On this particular rock my feet kept slipping. I'm sure it had to do with the way I was positioning my body. I feel I need to learn efficiency during holding. Working out my arms and upper body couldn't hurt either :}

It was my first time bouldering and I feel good about it. Danielle said I did good and I want to try again soon. My arms were thoroughly exhausted by ending time. Also, my hands were raw as burger but that'll pass with time. As a sprouting beginner I feel confident that with time and supreme patience skills I'll be able to conquer these paths.

Today i changed my oil.
yes, i change my own oil.
no, i will NOT dump my oil down a sewer drain or into my local pond.
yes, i am a firm believer in recycling oil and everything else that you can recycle.
yes, i think this first paragraph is l a m e.

I'm planning on going back home to NM to visit for the holidays.
That's exiciting for me especially since I havn't been home for awhile
and my little brother will be married by the time i arrive. neat.

This past week has been the pits. Sorta.
I had a migrane all day this past Sunday. I finally relized that I had migrane medicine in
my car and moved myself downstairs from my room, into the freezing cold living room,
and out the door where it was snowing (hooray!). I looked at the snow and felt peaceful.
Then as i was walking down the front stairs i slipped, my lower back hit a stair edge and my
elbow hit another. I found myself laying in agony at the base of the stairs (there are only
like 5 or 6 of them) for like 4 minutes.
The pain overshadowing the cold and everthing else that mattered in the world at that time.
I remember hearing a cruching sound and hoped that i didn't damage anything. I started to
feel dizzy sorta like when you in/exhale too much helium and you feel really disassociated with
your body with thoughts like, "do i really exist?, what is time?, is this really happening?".
I almost blacked out.
Then came the ringing in my ears.
Long-story-short, i tried again and sucessfully got the medication to treat my now
migrane/nausea/backpain/elbowpain/feaver-like ailing condition.

It was during that time when i realized i wanted to say, "mom". I did. It felt good to say it.
I went to bed.

Still feelin sucky. That's why i'm writing about it.

Battle Angel Alita: Last Order

My first Manga.

Last night, at Tokyo's Anime here
in Salt Lake City, i purchased this little graphic novel.
So far it's really superb.
I cherish every cell for the details, motion, and little things like physics.

The fact that i paid about 10.50 for this little guy
also makes me want to really milk this book for what it's got.
Reaching out to even put myself in some of the characters' situations and positions, adding
another dimension to the immersive qualities this manga can create.
What FUN (no, really, i'm serious)!

Of course it IS manga and sometimes it's a little far-fetched
but all-in-all it's what i consider a super book
(not that it means too much because, after all, this IS my first manga).

Oh yea, and the sounds i think are a little different.
I mean the onomatopoeic kinds.
I catch myself trying to make my own because the ones they give me just don't feel right.
Does anyone else agree?
I think it's a cultural thing because the sounds from
the US graphic novels seem to mesh very well for me.

I'm only up to the 3rd phase (or chapter) of the book so wish me luck on my voyage!

Turkey Weekend

I always have mixed feelings about Thanksgiving.
Mostly because not only is it a celebration day for the Native American oppression
but i can't help but feel thankful for all of the wonderful freedom that i have.

I suppose i should just be thankful. That's the bottom line.

It's so great to be happy on the holidays when your family is so far away.
I think that it's tops when you become self-sufficient enough to provide for
your own happiness and don't need outside stimuli to feel joy from people or substance.

Right now, sitting at a computer at the public library there are tons of interesting faces.
All types of people from all walks of life. Looking at each other, curious.

I have to work tonight at 7 and close at 11:30.
Just the right time to get grooving at the
Just Wanna Dance fun-time extravaganza.
It's the last one so it should be fun.

4-day weekends.
